English

The success of our literacy programs is reflected in our excellent literacy National Assessment results. Our students are extended and supported with modern and dynamic teaching strategies tailored to individual students.

Our whole school planning aims at instilling a high level of knowledge and competency in talking, listening, reading, viewing and writing with purpose, effect and confidence.

Killara Public School has had outstanding results with its new phonics program - Synthetic Phonics. This program is now implemented in K-3 and has been viewed as an exemplary program. A recent visit from the Deputy Director General , Schools commended the program.

At a glance synthetic phonics:

  • Teaches children that spoken words are composed of phonemes (sounds)
  • Teaches these 44 phonemes
  • Teaches all the different ways each phoneme can be written
  • Teaches children to blend phonemes in a word to read
  • Teaches children to listen for phonemes in words to spell

For students learning English as their second language, a specialist ESL teacher is employed to support their learning. This support is offered both in the classroom or in small groups withdrawn for intensive English instruction.

Children experiencing difficulties in Literacy are supported by our STLA teacher who providesclass, individual and small group support.

Both the ESL and STLA teachers instuct using the synthetic phonics approach.
